De effecten van orkaan Rita vallen mee, roepen we in koor. Dus mogen financiële markten weer omhoog. Totdat de olieprijs opeens weer fors begint te stijgen. De roze zonnebril kan weer af. Tijd voor een paar harde feiten. Door de beide orkanen liggen elf raffinaderijen plat. En de voorraad stookolie voor de winter moet nog worden opgebouwd. Circa 15% van de raffinagecapaciteit is momenteel uitgeschakeld. Het herstel van de industrie in de Golf van Mexico kan maanden gaan duren. Ook beginnen de eerste berichten binnen te komen dat Rita helemaal niet zo meevalt. De ‘Henry Hub’, waar een derde (!) van de aardgascapaciteit doorheen gaat, ligt onder water. Ook is er aanzienlijke schade aan raffinaderijen en olieplatforms. U wilt meer feiten? Check het ‘situation report’ van het Ministerie van Energie van vandaag. Een wake-up call voor beleggers...

Rita may have landed at Sabine Pass as a category 3 hurricane but she plowed through Gulf of Mexico offshore oilfields at a Category 5 level knocking down jackjup rigs and setting deepwater floating rigs adrift. As storm generated seas rose to meet the US Gulf continental shelf drilling rigs and fixed production platforms were severely damaged and in some cases sunk [...] If these early reports are any indication of the total offshore facilities damage caused by Rita, natural gas and oil prices will be moving up smartly to new highs in the weeks ahead.
